Most hail damage cannot be seen from the ground. The clearest signs are bruised or pocked shingles, granules collecting in your gutters, and dents in soft metal like gutters, vents and flashing. A free roof inspection is the only way to know for sure.
Hail is sneaky. A storm can bruise a whole roof and leave almost nothing you can spot from the driveway, then show up as a leak months later once the damaged shingle finally fails. Here is what actually tells you a roof took a hit.
1. Bruised or pocked shingles
Hail knocks the protective granules off the shingle and leaves a soft, dark bruise you can often feel with a hand. Those spots are where the shingle will fail first.
2. Granules in the gutters and downspouts
Piles of sand like grit in the gutters or at the bottom of downspouts after a storm mean the shingle surface is being stripped.
3. Dents in soft metal
Gutters, vent caps, flashing and even the fins on your AC unit dent easily. If those are dinged, your shingles almost certainly took hits too.
4. Cracked or split shingles
Larger hail can crack shingles outright, which lets water straight past the protective layer.
5. A leak or water stain weeks later
Sometimes the first sign is a ceiling stain that shows up long after the storm. By then the damage has been working on your decking for a while.

Can I check for hail damage myself?
You can look for the easy signs from the ground, dented gutters, granules in the downspouts, a leak inside, but functional shingle damage is genuinely hard to judge without getting on the roof safely. A free inspection removes the guesswork.
How long do I have to file a hail claim?
It varies by insurer, but most give you a window measured in months to a year after the storm. Sooner is better, because damage gets harder to tie to a specific storm as time passes.
Does small hail still cause damage?
It can. Even pea to marble size hail driven by wind can bruise shingles and knock off granules, which is why a roof that looks fine can still have taken a hit.
